EgerWe picked up our car at Budapest and basically travelled clockwise around the country. Headining west, our first night in Hungary was spent in Eger. From Eger, we backtracked to Holloko, before heading south toward Tiszafured. Kecskemet, Szeged, Pecs, and Balaton completed the bottom half of our circle. Our western most point was on the border at Koszeg. We then went north to Sopron, before our final leg back to Budapest via Estergom and Visegrad on the Danube.
I won't claim we saw everything worth seeing in Hungary, but given the time frame I think we covered a fair chunk of the highlights. The distances are not great, by Australian standards at least, but the roads are poor, and the traffic flow moves slowly, even on country roads. You are sharing the 'main roads' with bicyclists, horses and carts, old trucks, and the occasional stray animal. Shoulders are narrow and far between. Overtaking is an art form.
I had the advantage of travelling with my mother, who speaks Hungarian. All things considered, we had enough trouble getting around with this significant head start. I had a great time, seeing the country that my mother is from, but I can't see myself going back on without someone who speaks the language.
The rest of the trip was spent at a conference in both Vienna and Budapest.
Now all I have to do is figure out how to get the English keyboard to give me the right characters to get the place names correct...
